What are the Key Functions of a Network Management System ?

Network management systems are used to track the performance of networks across a wide spectrum of processes and variables. Network management systems vary in design--some look directly at pack transfer, while others take a broader view of traffic and performance. Three of the most important network aspects that these systems monitor are performance/speed, configuration and security.

Network m anagement systems look at performance by monitoring both the system as a whole and the use of system resources by individual users. Performance thresholds are determined for the system as a whole and each individual user, which allows administrators to quickly sort out and solve issue related to bandwidth consumption and availability. These systems can also be used to test the potential effects of network expansion.

Configuration systems look not only at the flow of data across the network, but at the specific routes taken by the data. Bottlenecks can occur if networks are not properly configured to handle the specific requirements of certain network sectors. Network management systems pave the way for optimal utilization of available resources by looking for the specific distribution of said resources in different areas of the network.

    Network Management Systems for Security

Security management systems are perhaps the most important management modules. Effective protection of networks against DoS and DDoS threats is best achieved thorough management and monitoring. When an administrator knows exactly what should be happening on his network, he or she can sort out performance drops due to outside threats. Management systems aid in this process by providing alerts when network performance drops below baselines and restricting network access by unauthorized users.

    Choosing a Network Management System

There are many network management system available for people to choose. Typically, the functions of a network management system focus on certain aspects. For example, some systems are mainly performing network configuration functions, while others may specialize on network performance management. The cost of the management system is very different depends on its functionalities, what are the principles used to perform the network management and the brand name of the vendor. One must study the functionalities very carefully before choosing a network management system.
