Wi-Fi Wireless LAN Frequency, Bands and Channels

Wi-Fi technologies defined by IEEE 802.11b/g/n are operated in the frequency 2.4 GHz, in which the 2.4 GHz spectrum is divided into 14 overlapping, staggered 20 MHz wireless carrier channels whose center frequencies are 5 MHz apart. The 802.11a/n is operated in the 5.0GHz spectrum with more channels. 802.11n also uses channel bonding technique that combines two of 20MHz carrier channels into one 40 MHz channel to increase throughput.

The channels that are available for use in a particular country differ according to the regulations of that country. In the United States, for example, FCC regulations only allow channels 1 through 11 to be used. In Europe channels 1–13 are licensed for 802.11b operation (with 1, 5, 9 and 13 usually deployed). In Japan, all 14 channels are licensed for 802.11b operation. In the following tables, we listed the channel ID, central frequency of each channel for each regulatory domain.
