CDMA, as one of the main mobile wireless technologies, is evolving from the second generation (2G) cdmaOne to the third generation (3G) CDMA2000 technologies. The underlying principle of the CDMA2000 evolution path is backward and forward compatibility which allows operators to seamlessly and cost-effectively upgrade their existing networks to support enhanced capabilities and advanced services. The road map of the CDMA2000 network evolution is charged by the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2).
For the core network, the CDMA network evolution is taking place from the circuit switched network, to a hybrid LMSD network, and then to the all IP Multimedia Domain (MMD) network.
For the radio access network, the CDMA radio interfaces are evolving from the 2G cdmaOne-IS-95A to the 2.5G IS-95B and CDMA2000 1xRTT (IS-2000), then the 3G CDMA2000 EV-DO and EV-DV.
Each technology upgrade in the access and core networks brings new services to the markets. It grows from circuit switched voice and low speed data, to medium speed data, and then to high speed multimedia services in an all IP packet switched network.
CDMA2000 can be deployed in several phases. The first phase, CDMA2000 1x, supports an average of 144 kbps packet data in a mobile environment. The second release of 1x, called 1x-EV-DO will support data rates up to 2 Mbits/sec on a dedicated data carrier. Finally, 1x-EV-DV will support even higher peak rates, simultaneous voice and high-speed data, as well as improved Quality of Service mechanisms.
A key component of CDMA2000 systems will be a new Packet Core Network (PCN) that allows for the delivery of packet data services with more speed and security. The CDMA2000 PCN is one of the first steps in the evolution of CDMA2000 systems to All-IP and multi-media architecture.
